RSK is certified to OHSAS 18001 and monitors its performance through an integrated safety, health and environmental management system (SHEMS). An in-house management team arranges regular audits and training to ensure the system is not static. In 2006, the Achilles Verify scheme gave RSK a 90% rating for its health and safety management system and 89% for its on-site performance.

Indicative of RSK’s health and safety credentials is the fact that BP has given us performance-related health and safety awards – including the coveted Diamond Award – every year we have worked on a term contract for BP Remediation Management, which began in 2003.  Additional awards in this field have come from Kimberly-Clark and Lattice.

Notes:
1) AIR = (No. of reportable accidents/(number of full employees + full-time contractors)) x 100,000 = number of reportable accidents per 100,000 employed

2) AFR = (No. of reportable accidents/number of hours worked) x 100,000 = number of reportable accidents per 100,000 hours worked

Reportable accidents include fatalities, major injuries and over three-day injuries.  They do not include reportable dangerous occurrences or reportable diseases.

3) Employee strained his back when lifting a borehole cover and was away from work for two weeks - manual handling training reviewed.

4) Gas pipeline punctured during the excavation of a trial pit – drawings show pipe in different location to reality.  Lessons learnt sent to all employees.

5) 11kV cable severed during the drilling of a borehole – further Cable Avoidance Tools (CATs) purchased and training completed.  Workshops held to discuss best practice with all relevant staff.  Guidance to employees subsequently updated.

6) Employee strained his back whilst lowering a box of site samples and site equipment.  Accident occurred on a Friday and employee was unable to return to work until the following Tuesday – information on manual handling re-communicated to all employees.

7) 11kV cable impacted by a rotary drilling rig causing a flash – specialist service location contractor failed to identify cable.  Re-communicated the need to CAT scan all location prior to drilling/digging.

8) Employee broke ankle whilst walking across front of office over uneven ground.

9) Dangerous occurrence: struck gas main shown incorrectly on Transco supplied plans.
