Awareness and training

In collaboration with RSK Group's fully-owned communications consultancy, tes, we can offer innovative and influential training packages to effect positive change.

Our bespoke training, workshop and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events cove the full range of sustainability and energy/carbon issues including:

  • Sustainability drivers and benefits
  • Code for Sustainable Homes
  • BREEAM/EcoHomes
  • Low/zero carbon energy technologies
  • Single Assessment Process (SAP) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPC)
  • Carbon neutral strategies

Bespoke software tools

By teaming up with trailblazing software developers RSK Project Services, we can create bespoke, user-friendly monitoring and reporting tools for carbon accounting, communication initiatives (internal and external), financial appraisals and decision-making processes. Our programmers can tackle any problem, including developing specific management software for EU ETS and Carbon Reduction Commitment participants.

Building management systems

In collaboration with RSK Group subsidiary Building Sciences, we enhance operational buildings' management and control systems to optimise energy use and minimise carbon emissions. This entails identifying the problems and providing recommendations on improvement measures for heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation systems.

Carbon footprinting, auditing and verification
We undertake detailed audits to referenced protocols and standards to determine carbon and greenhouse gas emission inventories. Where required, we can provide verifier statements to support public reporting and quality assurance requirements. Developing inventories help determine reporting parameters and baselines against which future emission reduction strategies can be assessed. RSK Carbon Management then uses a cost-benefit analysis of planned activities to identify the most cost-effective solutions.

Corporate reporting and communication

Communication is an integral part of any emissions reduction strategy, whether it is with investors, regulators, staff or the wider community. In collaboration with RSK Group’s fully owned communications consultancy tes, RSK Carbon Management can convert technical best practice and complex jargon into resonant messages and iconic imaging across a multitude of media to engage staff, effect behavioural change and relate to key stakeholders.

Emission trading

Organisations qualifying for the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) or the Carbon Reduction Commitment’s eventual cap and trade markets stand to reap significant rewards if they lower emissions. We indentify potential liabilities and procedural and reporting requirements to help you optimise financial returns using both energy-efficient practices and trading mechanisms.

Energy auditing and strategic energy management

Following a data acquisition survey programme, RSK Carbon Management devises a structured, continually improving monitoring and targeting strategy. The service is not only applicable to fixed location assets, but also to logistical problems such as vehicle fleet management. In the context of the current market trend for fluctuating energy and fuel costs, good strategic energy management can yield significant cost savings.

Our services include:
  • Load measurement
  • Consumption measurement
  • Temperature measurement
  • Occupancy assessment
  • Lighting levels
  • Review of metering and control systems
  • Review of site plans, manuals and equipment specifications

Energy modelling and Energy Performance Certificates

To support the requirements for Building Regulations, the Code for Sustainable Homes and planning policy targets, energy and carbon modelling is carried out by trained staff using specialist Government-approved software packages. Modelling is also carried out in conjunction with RSK’s building envelope specialists, Building Sciences, to enable Energy Performance Certificates (and, in future, Display Energy Certificates for public buildings), which are now required on new, refurbished or rented buildings. Building Sciences additionally advises on how build quality, building fabric and the control of airflow can deliver low energy buildings. This includes air tightness testing.

Product assessments

We can conduct life cycle assessments of both the direct and indirect environmental performance of a product or service. Increasingly required by legislation, such assessments can be used as the basis to incorporate clean design principles and to cut costs in the supply chain.

Renewable energy option appraisal, design and installation

Many planning authorities require new developments to source 10% or more of their energy demand from on-site renewable or low carbon energy technologies. RSK Carbon Management calculates the total emissions of the final development, pinpoints the renewable energy options that work best and, using specialist RSK Group company RSK Renewables, design, supplies and installs them.

Strategy and policy

RSK Carbon Management identifies your business drivers (including legislation and stakeholder expectations) and draws up a pertinent action plan to help facilitate emission reduction and adaptation to existing or pending legislation (such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment). This service can include policy development, behavioural change programmes, energy efficiency measures and the use of low to zero carbon technologies including renewable supplies.

For example, for the CRC we can offer the following integrated services:

  • Energy audits to estimate current usage;
  • Targeted abatement strategies
  • Training and workshop facilitation to implement behavioural change
  • Assistance in joining Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme
  • Evidence pack preparation.

Sustainable building assessments

RSK Carbon Management provides comprehensive sustainable building design assessments to property developers, architects and asset managers in both the domestic and public housing sector. We offer a one-stop-shop for BREEAM, EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Homes services (from early stage pre-assessment and design advice to post-construction reviews). We can also support all stages of the development cycle, including planning applications and environmental statements, through to post construction and operational building reviews.
