The concepts of Best Available Techniques (BAT) are formally used in environmental regulatory permits such as Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC), though they are applicable to any industrial operator wanting to assess and optimise cost versus environmental impact for a new project or ongoing operations.

A BAT assessment can be undertaken to:

  • Achieve compliance with regulatory limits for releases to air, water (including sewer) or land
  • Satisfy regulatory improvement conditions
  • Optimise processes
  • Minimise process/project environmental impact and associated cost
  • Progress waste minimisation programmes
  • Justify to regulators that existing processes, practices and abatement techniques are BAT
  • Select cost-effective technologies for gaseous emissions, liquid discharges and solid waste management
  • Help companies meet corporate targets

Inappropriate techniques can prove costly, requiring operators to revisit the problem more than once. RSK uses a structured methodology based on a recognised environmental control hierarchy to ensure performance enhancements occur with minimal cost and resource implications.

In addition, RSK can provide project management and technical input during all or any stage of the BAT project life, including:

  • Facilitating Root Cause Investigations (RCI) to identify the root cause(s) of the emissions problem and aid options generation
  • Exploring available techniques and developing tailored, cost-effective solutions
  • Providing expertise in process safety, risk assessments and commissioning to ensure that appropriate controls are in place during the implementation of BAT
