RSK Group acquires Building Sciences as it ramps up carbon management business

RSK Group has acquired Britain’s foremost ‘building envelope’ design, construction and testing company, Building Sciences, making it one of the largest and most qualified providers of energy and emissions performance-related consultancy to the housing and construction industries.

The addition of 20 new employees means RSK’s dedicated Carbon Management company, RSK Carbon Management, can now draw on a pool of 50 specialist employees to offer a “one-stop-shop” for low environmental impact developments at every stage, from design to post-completion monitoring.

It is a deal that consolidates RSK’s position as both the UK’s largest privately owned environmental consultancy and the fastest growing company of its kind.

In 2007 six acquisitions helped fuel a 50% turnover and staff expansion.

Building Sciences managing director Stuart Borland said:

“It is great to be a part of the RSK Group. Increasingly, we found that our clients wanted to deal fewer consultancies, so this is a fantastic opportunity for us to develop.

Building Sciences is the most credible company in what is a niche market and is sold on the quality of its name and services. The merger means we can reach a much larger client-base and augment existing RSK projects.”

RSK Group chairman Dr Alan Ryder said:

“This is a fantastic addition to the RSK Group and will give our Carbon Management business a tremendous boost. Legislation and consumer demand is combining to push for more efficiency in terms of building design and RSK and Building Sciences want to be at the forefront of making that a reality.”

Established in 1986, Building Sciences was the first in the UK to offer the construction industry – from designers and contractors to end-users – consultancy and testing advice related to the building fabric performance of heat, air, moisture and acoustics.

As the most pre-eminent company in its field, it has built up an experiential track record that reads like a who’s who of UK developers, including major names such as AMEC, Asda Superstores, George Wimpey and Bovis Lend Lease.

RSK’s acquisition comes as the Government proposes to roll out the Code For Sustainable Homes environmental rating scheme to encompass private housing schemes in April, as well as its implementation of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (Directive2002/91/EC) in England and Wales (wherein information packs for dwellings with four or more bedrooms must include an energy performance certificate) this month.

Though only established last July, RSK Carbon Management is rapidly emerging as one of the most capable companies of its kind, offering specialist consultancy that incorporates such RSK servives as code for sustainable homes and Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) assessments, ecological surveys, remediation, environmental site management and sustainable drainage solutions.
