Remediation strategy and design – finding a robust, economical solution

When it comes to contaminated land, RSK knows what works best and where. We know that the days of ‘dig and dump’ are numbered, so we have positioned ourselves at the forefront of introducing treatment-based approaches to the UK. To us, this isn’t innovation – it’s routine. Our remediation schemes can be quicker, cheaper and more sustainable.

Remedial options appraisal

When risk assessment demonstrates that a site needs remediation, we carry out an options appraisal to see what the clean-up possibilities are. It is required by planners and regulators and, in our view, is critical for ‘added value’. Remediation options are assessed against site-specific viability, a process that can be assisted by our European Centre of Excellence.

Whether it is as simple as a cost-benefit analysis of suitable option or a complex operation involving bench studies and/or field trials, we have the expertise to pinpoint the most cost-effective, efficient way forward.

Remediation strategy

Before the scheme is designed in detail or implemented, a consensus must be reached with the planners and regulators. RSK does this by presenting a remediation strategy that describes the selected method(s), how they can be implemented, what the impacts will be, all relevant mitigation measures and how the site will be validated. Our experts are highly experienced in preparing these documents and know how to pre-empt issues of concern and avoid potential ‘show-stoppers’.

Remediation design

Once the remediation approach has been approved, our engineers produce a 'complete design' describing the technical approach. It may include engineering controls for minimising pollution and discharge, Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) analysis and schedule- and cost-optimising programme management strategies.

Our design is adaptable to client needs/preferences. RSK can proceed directly to remediation on a full ‘turnkey’ basis, using our fully owned remediation contractor RemedX or, alternatively, we can follow the traditional route of design and specification preparation, formal tendering and on-site supervision of the selected remediation contractor.

Validation

Validating successful remediation is crucial to obtain regulatory sign-off and satisfy future purchasers/funders of the site. RSK knows the ins and outs of this process.
