Bird surveys: Wintering, breeding and migrating

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects all wild bird species in the UK, which makes it an offence to intentionally harm a wild bird or destroy a nest or eggs. Specially protected species are also protected from disturbance.

For small sites with only common species, simple measures such as only clearing vegetation in the winter are usually sufficient to comply with legislation.

For larger developments where complex surveys are needed, such wind farms or airports, RSK’s ornithological team has the specialist survey skills necessary to design and carry out robust surveys and assess impacts. Our ornithologists also have the experience and knowledge to understand your needs when devising mitigation strategies.

We provide a wide range of services in the UK and overseas, including surveys for individual species, breeding birds and winter birds; common bird censuses; vantage point surveys; collision risk assessments; peak (core) counts; and habitat mitigation and management.
