European Protected Species: Bats, hazel dormouse, great crested newt and otter

European Protected Species (EPS) are legally protected by European and domestic legislation. RSK holds the relevant licences to survey for all European Protected Species.

Our ecologists have the experience needed to make informed and reasonable judgements about whether protected species might be present. If protected species are likely, they have specialist survey skills and in-depth knowledge of the guidelines, which means that our detailed surveys are robust and cost-effective.

Once any surveys are complete, we work with our clients to decide the best strategy for helping their development plans to proceed. This might involve measures to avoid, mitigate or compensate for any impacts. If a development is likely to affect protected species, we regularly obtain EPS licences for our clients.

Though the species protection process can be complicated and confusing, RSK’s ecologists are familiar with the system and used to guiding developers through the process and helping them to avoid costly delays.
