“Back in December 2017, I was made aware that I was eligible to apply for IPLOCA’s £4500 scholarship opportunity, which is only available to the children and grandchildren of employees of IPLOCA member companies,” says Richard. “I have just finished sixth form, where I studied A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and History. In September, I will be attending Imperial College London, UK, to study physics with a year abroad, hopefully in France or Switzerland.
“I had to name a university on the application form, but I wasn’t sure which one I would attend, so I contacted IPLOCA, which confirmed that the scholarship would be valid for whichever university I attend. The deadline for applications was at the end of February 2018, so I had plenty of time to fill out and submit the relevant online forms and include the required essays about my personal achievements and future goals. I also needed to add a reference from my teacher at school.
“In early May, I got a reply about my application. I had been selected to receive 1 of the 20 scholarships that were available this year. I was very excited, because it would make living in London more affordable. I had several more forms to fill out and had to go in search of a fax machine to send them off again. Our system is vastly different to the American system, so I’m still waiting for a few forms. Once I’ve completed them, I will be able to receive the scholarship, which I am sure will make a great difference to my first year at university.
“I have also been asked to attend an awards ceremony at the Park Plaza Hotel ballroom in London, UK, in September, which is very exciting. I don’t have many details about it yet, but I am looking forward to it and to being able to start university in style.”
