Property developer Urban Evolution wished to construct 14 five-storey residential properties on Woodclyffe Drive, Chislehurst, over part of the famous ‘Chislehurst Caves’, a network of manmade chalk and flint mines.
The site was known to have numerous collapse-settlement features and voids beneath it that were associated with the mine workings, some of which had been backfilled with rubble. The site also sloped steeply from north to south away from its access point. The surface soil, mainly comprising made ground, was believed to have been end-tipped from Woodclyffe Drive. Working with engineer Glanville Consultants, RSK overviewed the initial investigations carried out by others then specified and undertook supplementary investigations.
