Pwllheli to Blaenau Ffestiniog: Gas pipeline replacement

When a section of gas pipeline became exposed along the banks of the River Eden in Cumbria, National Grid was presented with a potential safety risk and the risk of disruption to gas supply to North West England, so decided to divert the pipeline. The replacement work involved constructing temporary working areas on each side of the river to enable the installation of a new section of pipeline using a technique known as horizontal directional drilling.

Aware of the need to ensure the proposed development does not cause adverse environmental impacts, National Grid contacted RSK to provide specialist advice and support to ensure the development could be delivered lawfully and within the tight timescales imposed by the planned outage.
