The Grassmoor lagoons site is in a former colliery tip next to Grassmoor Country Park between the villages of Grassmoor, Corbriggs and Temple Normanton in Derbyshire. The lagoons were formed in spoil tips at the former Grassmoor colliery, which operated on the site from the 1840s until its closure in 1967. Derbyshire County Council owns the site and has elected to voluntarily remediate the potential sources of pollution at the site.
The project’s objective was to remediate the polluted area of land and turn it into a recreational site for the benefit and enjoyment of the whole community, thereby enabling it to be incorporated into the adjacent Grassmoor Country Park.
