With estimated reserves of 1 Tcf of gas, the Corrib gas field, which is located 80 km off Erris Head in County Mayo, has the potential to supply up to 60% of Ireland’s peak gas demands. Discovered by Enterprise Oil in 1996 and subsequently taken over by Shell E&P Ireland Ltd in 2002, it was the first natural gas find in Ireland since 1973. In 2000, RSK undertook the environmental impact assessment for the onshore gas terminal at Bellanaboy, which included a detailed landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA).
RSK’s landscape team carried out the LVIA for the proposed terminal facilities. After submission of the environmental and social impact assessment and the planning application, RSK successfully acted as an expert witness on landscape and visual issues at the subsequent planning appeals. The LVIA involved detailed consultations with the client and the local authority to agree the scope and extent of the assessment and the key viewpoints for visualisation and detailed assessment.
