RSK’s earliest involvement with HS2 was in 2009/2010 as a consultant in Heathrow Airport Ltd’s environmental team examining options for a third runway and improved surface access for the whole airport, including an HS2 Heathrow spur or loop. RSK was responsible for the land quality and ground conditions aspects of the route options appraisal. The area around Heathrow and the adjacent Colne Valley has been worked extensively for minerals. Many of the resultant voids have been subsequently landfilled, which has resulted in complex geoenvironmental and geotechnical conditions. RSK reported on the opportunities and constraints associated with tens of route variants encompassing surface and tunnelled alignments.
